What are flip-up clip-on sunglasses?
A flip-up clip-on is a clip-on with a hinge at the top. The tinted lenses lift up out of your view and drop back down when you need them. Flip-up clip-ons, flip-up shades for glasses and flip sunglasses for glasses all mean the same thing.
Flip-up, spring or hidden clip-on: which should you choose?
| Type | How it attaches | Best for | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flip-up | Clips on, then hinges up out of view | Moving between sun and shade | Check the size, as with any clip-on |
| Spring or fixed clip | Grips the frame; you take it off indoors | A low-profile look in steady sun | You remove it rather than flip it |
| Hidden clip | Small clips sit behind the lens | The most discreet look, worn down all day | You take it off to go indoors |
| Fit-over | Sits over your whole pair of glasses | Very curved or chunky frames | Larger than a clip-on |
Flip-up: for moving between light and shade
Good for driving, shopping, walking and golf.
Spring or fixed clip-on: a low-profile option
These come off when you go indoors. See all clip on sunglasses for glasses.
Hidden-clip clip-on: the most discreet look
Best when you’ll wear the clip-on down all day in the sun.
When a fit-over is better
For very curved or chunky frames, or if you want side protection, choose fit over sunglasses.
Will flip-up clip-ons fit my glasses?
Metal, plastic and rimless frames
Most flip-ups fit standard metal and plastic frames when you match the size. The Large Flip Up (60 × 50mm) fits full-rim, semi-rimless and rimless glasses. Flexura and Lenso use a four-point rubber grip made for acetate (plastic) and metal frames. For other models on rimless glasses, check with us before you order.
Curved and wraparound frames
A clip-on can sit awkwardly on strongly curved lenses. A fit-over is usually better.
Varifocals and bifocals
Choose a lens about 50mm deep or more, so the reading area is covered too. Deep models include Solévo (52 × 61mm), Wayfaré Luxe (54 × 55mm), Aurex (57 × 54mm), Velvette (58 × 54mm), Flexura Large (62 × 54mm) and the Large Flip Up (60 × 50mm). Sizes are width × depth.
Will it scratch my glasses?
A little care helps protect your lenses. Clean your glasses and the clip-on first, so no grit gets trapped. Attach it from the top rather than sliding it across the lens. Keep it in a case when you are not wearing it. A hard case for clip-ons gives extra protection.
How to size flip-up clip-ons
Measure one lens in mm, to the outside edge
Measure one lens across its widest point, then from top to bottom at its tallest point, including any rim. In a code like 52-18-140 on the arm of your glasses, the first number is the lens width.
Match the shape, and go slightly larger if in doubt
If the clip-on dips down at the nose bridge, it is too narrow for your frames. The Large Flip Up, Flexura and Lenso models can be trimmed to fit. Trimmed items may get a reduced refund if you return them. Our size guide has more help.
How the flip works
The hinge sits at the top bridge. Lift the front to flip the lenses up, and lower it to flip them down. Each product page describes its own hinge.
Flip-up clip-ons for driving
In daylight, polarised flip-ups cut reflected glare. Flip them up for tunnels or to read the satnav, as some screens look dim through polarised lenses. The AA and RAC advise that category 4 lenses are not suitable for driving. Rule 94 of the Highway Code says not to use tinted glasses at night or in poor visibility. Yellow-tint flip-ups are in our night driving range.
Polarised or non-polarised flip-ups?
Polarised lenses cut glare from wet roads and water. Two of our flip-ups, Nexa and ORI VISO, are non-polarised. They suit people who find polarised lenses make screens hard to read. Each product page says whether its lenses are polarised. Grey keeps colours natural, brown adds contrast, and mirrored lenses suit very bright sun.
Flip-up clip-ons for men, women and children
Choose by size and shape, not gender. Our flip-ups run from 52mm to 67mm wide and 40mm to 61mm deep. The kids’ flip-up is 55 × 34mm (width × depth). See our clip on sunglasses for kids’ glasses.

Flip-up clip-on sunglasses: your questions answered
What are flip-up clip-on sunglasses?
They are tinted lenses that clip onto your prescription glasses and flip up on a hinge when you don’t need them, so you don’t have to take them off indoors. They are also called flip-up shades or flip sunglasses for glasses. Flip them down outside and up when you go inside.
Are flip-up clip-ons better than normal clip-on sunglasses?
They are better if you move between bright and dim places a lot: flip up indoors, down outside. Fixed spring or hidden clips are lower-profile and suit wearing all day in the sun. See all our clip on sunglasses to compare the styles and sizes.
Will flip-up clip-on sunglasses fit my glasses?
Usually yes, if you match the size. Compare your lens width × depth in mm with the size on each product. Most suit standard metal and plastic frames. The Large Flip Up also fits semi-rimless and rimless glasses. For other models on rimless glasses, check with us first. Very curved or chunky frames suit fit over sunglasses better.
What size flip-up clip-ons do I need?
Measure one lens across its widest point and from top to bottom at its tallest point, to the outside edge. Choose the same size or slightly larger. For varifocals, choose a deeper lens of around 50mm or more. See our size guide, or call or WhatsApp 07910 693819.
Can I drive wearing flip-up clip-on sunglasses?
Yes, in daylight. Polarised flip-ups reduce glare, and you can flip them up for tunnels or to read the satnav. The AA and RAC advise against category 4 lenses for driving. Rule 94 of the Highway Code says not to wear tinted glasses at night or in poor visibility.
Are flip-up clip-on sunglasses polarised?
Many are, and each product page says whether its lenses are polarised. We also sell two non-polarised flip-ups, Nexa and ORI VISO. These suit people who find polarised lenses make phone or dashboard screens hard to read. Every pair has UV400 lenses.
What if the flip-ups don’t fit? Can I return them?
Yes. You have 14 days to return or exchange them, including sale items. Tell us within 14 days of delivery and send the item back unused. The refund covers the item and your original standard delivery. You pay return postage unless the item is faulty or wrong. Trimmed or used items may get a reduced refund. See our returns policy.
