How to choose clip on sunglasses that fit your glasses

Measure one lens: width and depth in mm

Measure one lens of your glasses across its widest point. Then measure it from top to bottom at its tallest point. Measure to the outside edge, including any rim. The code on the inside of the arm helps too. In a code like 52-18-140, the first number is the lens width in mm. Compare your numbers with the size in each product title. Our size guide has more help.

Match the shape

Choose a clip-on with a similar shape to your lenses. Browse round clip-ons, rectangle, square, oval and wayfarer clip-ons.

Go slightly larger if in doubt

A clip-on should cover your whole lens. If it is too small, light gets in at the edges. If it dips down at the nose bridge, it is too narrow for your frames. Some models can be trimmed to fit. Trimmed items may get a reduced refund if you return them.

Spring, hidden or flip-up: which clip type is right for you?

Type How it attaches Best for Watch-outs
Spring clip A sprung bridge grips your frame Plastic and thicker frames Check the lens size carefully
Hidden clip Small clips sit behind the lens A discreet look for all-day wear You take it off to go indoors
Flip-up Clips on, then hinges up out of view Moving between sun and shade Check the size, as with any clip-on
Fit-over Sits over your whole pair of glasses Very curved or chunky frames Larger than a clip-on

Spring clip-ons: best for plastic and thicker frames

The bridge flexes open, then springs back to hold the clip-on on your frame. This suits plastic and thicker frames.

Hidden-clip clip-ons: the most discreet look

The clips sit behind the lens, so from the front they look like ordinary sunglasses.

Flip-up clip-ons: flip up for shade, tunnels and shops

Lift the lenses when you go indoors, then flip them down again outside. See our flip up clip on sunglasses.

When a fit-over is the better choice

For very curved, wraparound or chunky frames, or if you want side protection, choose fit over sunglasses. They sit over your glasses instead of clipping on.

Polarised or non-polarised clip-ons?

Polarised lenses cut reflected glare from wet roads, water and car bonnets. Many drivers prefer them. Some people find polarised lenses make phone, satnav or dashboard screens look dim or patchy. Non-polarised lenses avoid this. Every product page says whether its lenses are polarised. All our clip-ons have UV400 lenses, which block UVA and UVB rays.

Which lens colour?

Grey or smoke lenses keep colours natural in bright sun. Brown and amber lenses add contrast, which many people like in changeable UK light. Green sits between the two. Mirrored lenses reflect more light and suit very bright days.

Clip on sunglasses for driving

Polarised clip-ons are popular for daytime driving because they reduce glare. Flip-ups let you lift the lenses for tunnels and car parks. The AA and RAC advise that the darkest lenses, category 4, are not suitable for driving. Rule 94 of the Highway Code says not to use tinted glasses at night or in poor visibility. Yellow-tint clip-ons are in our night driving range.

Will clip-ons fit plastic, metal or rimless frames?

Most clip-ons fit metal and plastic frames when you match the size. Spring-clip models suit plastic and thicker frames. Some models are made for metal frames only, and their titles say so. For rimless glasses, check the product page or call us first. For very curved or wraparound frames, a fit-over is usually better.

Clip on sunglasses for men, women and children

We don’t split our clip-ons by gender. Choose by size and shape. Widths run from about 51mm to 67mm. Small and petite styles are around 53–55mm wide. Large and oversized styles are around 60–65mm wide. For children’s glasses, see our clip on sunglasses for kids’ glasses.

Clip on sunglasses: your questions answered

Do clip-on sunglasses fit prescription glasses?

Yes. They clip onto the glasses you already wear. Match the lens width and depth in millimetres on the product page to one lens of your frames.

How do I measure my frames?

Measure one lens, not the whole frame. Width at the widest point, depth at the tallest point, in millimetres. It takes about 30 seconds with a ruler.

Should I choose polarised lenses for driving?

Polarised lenses cut glare from roads and water. Choose non-polarised if you need to read some digital screens clearly. Every pair is UV400.

What if the clip-ons do not fit?

You have 14 days to return or exchange. If you are unsure before you order, call or WhatsApp 07910 693819.

Are you a UK shop?

Yes. Clip-On Sunglasses is a UK specialist. Helpline 07910 693819, email info@clip-on-sunglasses.co.uk, weekdays 10am–5pm and Saturday 11am–4pm.

Are clip-on sunglasses as good as prescription sunglasses?

For everyday sun and glare protection, a well-fitted UV400 clip-on does the job for much less money, and you keep your own glasses. Prescription sunglasses give fuller coverage and a single lens with no extra layer. If you want the widest view and the neatest look, prescription sunglasses may suit you better.

Do clip-on sunglasses scratch your glasses?

They shouldn’t if you fit and remove them carefully. Scratches usually come from grit trapped between the two lenses. Clean both lenses first, clip on from the top, and keep the clip-on in a case when you are not using it. We sell a hard case for clip-ons.

What’s the difference between spring, hidden and flip-up clip-ons?

Spring clips grip the frame with a sprung bridge, which suits plastic and thicker frames. Hidden clips sit behind the lens for a discreet look. Flip-ups hinge up when you go indoors or through a tunnel, then flip back down. See our flip up clip on sunglasses.
